The Glorious Celebration Of Dussehra! (Things One Must Know)

The most awaited festival of the year is finally here. Though, India is famous to celebrate all the festivals with great joy, but Dussehra is the biggest of all. It marks the end of Navratri. Also known as Vijayadashami, it falls on the 10th day of Ashvin month as per the Hindu calendar. The entire nation celebrates Dussehra with immense joy and excitement.

Ramlila

It is the most important aspect of Dussehra celebration. Ramlila is the dramatic representation of the various stories related to the Hindu God Rama. It is mainly based on the ancient Hindu epic called Ramayana. Every year during Navaratri, it is performed by artists across the country.

The main event takes place on the day of Dussehra, which marks the defeat of evil by good. A giant statue of Ravana is burnt with fireworks.

Lord Rama

Lord Rama is the most virtuous hero of Hindu mythology. He is the 7th incarnation of lord Vishnu. He was the first son to king Dashrath of Ayodhya. Born to queen Kaushalya, Rama was the most worshipped man.

Sita

 

His three half brothers were – Lakshman, Bharath and Shatrughan. Sita, the daughter of earth goddess was married to lord Rama. Sita was kidnapped by Ravana, the king of Lanka. Ramayana, includes Rama’s journey to rescue Sita.

The Other Aspect

Vijayadashami aka Dussehra is also related to the aspects of goddess Devi, Durga. Also known as Durga Puja, this one is mostly popular in the east side of the country.

The festival marks the battle of goddess Durga with Mahishasura. Hence, it is the symbol of the victory of good over evil . During this time, people mainly worship goddess Durga, along with other gods and goddesses like Lakshmi, Saraawati, Ganesh and Karthik.
